John Horrocks Cottage at Penwortham in the Clare Valley was built in 1839 by pioneer and explorer John Ainsworth Horrocks, one of the first Europeans to take up land in the area. He founded the village and named it Penwortham after his home in Lancashire, England.
The cottage is regarded as the oldest stone building north of Gawler and has been restored to reflect its original condition. An adjacent restored stone outbuilding holds photographs, books and other material on the cottage and local history.
